Casting Shadows: A Visual Exhibition & Celebration of York’s Black American History

5:30 PM – 8 PM: Opening Reception & Presentation by Ophelia Chambliss, Artist

York College Center for Community Engagement, 59 E. Market Street, York, PA 17401. Exhibit Runs AUG 2018 – SEPT 2019

When we stand in the light, a shadow is cast.

‘Casting Shadows’ is a visual representation of York’s Black American history, community, and stories. It is also a project designed to change the narratives we tell about the Black history and the Black community.

The images depict York’s Black lives from emancipation, through the civil rights movement, into the present conversations. The product of scholarly research and conversations with York’s current residents, it is told through more than 20 original works of art that highlight the historic vitality of our community.

You can visit the exhibit during the regular open hours of the York College Office of Community Engagement, 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. They suggest you call first, to ensure there is not an event in one of the rooms. Their number is 717-815-1213. The exhibit runs through September, 2019.

Art funding provided by York County Community Foundation
